Happy Sunday. The City Council met for its regular meeting this past Thursday and had plenty to discuss. Here is a quick overview of what came out of the meeting. SAFETY 🚂 Family Pleads for Safety Upgrades at Salty Bottom Road Crossing The most powerful moment of the night came during public comment, when Tanya Hawkins told the council about two separate tragedies at the unprotected railroad crossing on Salty Bottom Road. In 2004, her father was hit by a train at that crossing. He survived with massive injuries, and was never the same. Last month, Keegan Davis (36) and his daughter McKinley Davis (8) were killed there. Hawkins described the crossing as having no lights, no gates, and no protective barriers, with around 100 vehicles a day crossing it. She asked the council to work with ALDOT on safety upgrades and noted that if the local matching funds were the holdup, community members have offered to help cover them. The crossing falls outside city limits, so the council does not have direct jurisdiction, but the request was for advocacy and partnership. PARKS 🅿️ $2.3 Million Parking Lot Coming to Ditto Landing The council approved a $2,315,000 contract with Rogers Group, Inc. to build a 450 space parking lot at Ditto Landing. The new lot will help support continued growth at the Tennessee River park, which has become one of South Huntsville's most popular outdoor destinations for boating, paddling, and weekend events. GROWTH 🏗️ Two Commercial Annexations Approved The council approved two commercial annexations, adding to the city's tax base and continuing the steady outward growth of Huntsville's footprint. TRANSPORTATION 🛣️ First Step Toward a New I-65 Interchange The council took the first official step toward a new interchange on Interstate 65, a long discussed project that would improve access to the western edge of the metro and unlock additional growth in Limestone County. What this means for buyers. Major road and interchange projects almost always reshape commute patterns and property values around them. If you are considering a home west of the river, this is worth tracking. RETAIL 🛍️ Roadway Improvements Coming to Northern Bypass Ahead of New Retail Roadway improvements are coming to the Northern Bypass corridor ahead of new retail development in the area, a sign that North Huntsville continues to attract investment.
